The Second City Comedy Club is legendary in Chicago. Best known as the first ongoing improvisational theater group, it boasts some of the best comedy in Chicago, Toronto, and even Los Angeles. The theater officially opened its doors in December 1959 on infamous Wells Street and chose its name based on an article about Chicago A.J. Liebling that had appeared in a 1952 edition of The New Yorker. Did you know: Second City also products improv and sketch comedy shows for Norwegian Cruise Lines?
With a mantra to always be unconventional and non-conformist, the comedy produced at Second City continues to be progressive and original. Since first opening their doors, the comedy style of the Second City leans towards satire and commentary of current social norms and political figures and events.
Beyond leaving a significant imprint on the Chicago comedy scene, the Second City has been responsible for launching the careers of many of today’s most well-known comedy stars including: John Candy, Bill Murray, Eugene Levy, Martin Short, and Shelley Long. In fact, the theater has drawn in so much talent that since the 70’s, Saturday Night Live has sourced cast members from Second City that include: Gilda Radner, Tina Fey, John Belushi, Rachel Dratch, Dan Aykroyd, Mike Myers, and the late great Chris Farley.
What better way to unwind from a long day on the show floor with a few (or perhaps more than a few) laughs at one of Chicago’s most creative and inspiring landmarks! Who knows, you may even have the opportunity to experience the next big comedy star!
